Here at Shepherds Lane we not only produce premium fibers but also premium pelts and lambskins. As some of our sheep enter the food chain, we are mindful of each one and the part they play in the circle of life on a farm. It is in this spirit of respect that we preserve the essence of their being by harvesting these beautiful pelts and lambskins to be used and treasured for years to come. Each one is unique, no two are alike in character and color.

This pelt just glows. Teeswaters are known for their silky, lustrous locks and this lambskin has all those qualities. The snowy white fiber, the wave of the locks, the soft hand of the silky fiber, all speak to the senses. I wish you could touch this one, its so silky! It is a good sized skin, measuring about 39 inches long. Very well shaped and no holes or cuts in the hide. There are a few small punctures made by the tanner during the process but they are inconsequential to the life and usefulness of the pelt. The staple length varies from four to six inches and the fiber drapes nicely. This would be striking to have on the back of a couch or in a favorite chair. It could also be cut and stitched into wearables as it is so soft and pliable. It will attract attention wherever it goes!

These are tanned in the USA to be washable however I don’t recommend that they be laundered in a washer as it is difficult to get them as soft and pliable again as they are now. They can be spot cleaned, dry cleaned, or cleaned by a furrier. From time to time I air mine outside and occasionally hang them up and mist the wool. Then air dry them out of the direct sunshine so they dry slowly and don’t stiffen. Also can be put in the dryer for a quick fluff. They really are easy to care for, are incredibly resilient, and will last for years if given a bit of care and respect.

The gift giving season will be upon us shortly and this is a great way to say you care to that special person in your life. If you have any questions or need help finding that special lambskin, get in touch with me please. I have quite a collection in the Studio and may have just what you have been dreaming of finding!

Teeswaters are an amazing and unique breed of longwool sheep originating in the UK. They are big, bold, and beautiful animals. Here in the US they have been established using an upgrading program and imported semen from the UK. They always carry lustrous white wool with either brown or black points on their faces and legs making a stylish statement in the world of sheep breeds. They can grow up to an inch of high luster wool a month and their long locks are highly sought after by fiber artists the world around. In shorter fleece, they are covered with ringlets and tight curls that are equally appealing. The ATSA, which is the US breed Association that oversees their numbers has instituted the “Fiber of Distinction” program which we support and participate in.

These sheep are considered a rare breed in the UK and are listed on the Rare Breed Trust watch list. Here in the US, they were recently accepted by the Livestock Conservancy as an endangered breed. We have worked to support a viable population of these beautiful animals by importing genetics and maintaining a large flock of high quality breeding stock.

Shepherds Lane is known for, and by, its glorious flock of Teeswaters and the fiber that is produced here. We are proud to “preserve, protect, and promote” this beautiful and rare breed of sheep and will continue to do as long as we can!
